Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

from the talk-is-cheap dept

This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is Heart of Dawn with a comment about the idea that ICE and the Trump administration are stupid:

You don’t abduct people and put them in concentration camps (foreign or domestic) by simply doing something stupid.

Don’t let their gross incompetence fool you. They are fascists and they are EVIL.

In second place, it’s Ethin Probst with a comment about the idea that the government isn’t obligated to give out grant money:

Normally I wouldn’t even bother. But I shall point you to the constitution, which reads: “The Congress shall have the power… To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defence and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States […] No money shall be drawn from the treasury but in consequence of appropriations made by law; and a regular statement and account of the receipts and expenditures of all public money shall be published from time to time.” Seems pretty clear to me: Congress orders the executive how to spend money. The executive MUST spend money as congress directs, or be punished under law. The executive cannot arbitrarily decide to spend money which congress does not direct first.

For editor’s choice on the insightful side, our first place winner is Nathan F with a comment about what courts should be doing in response to ICE’s chaotic detentions:

Judge needs to ask where the defendant is and when the government says they are being held in concentration camp x the judge needs to insist that the defendant be present. That will get them out of the camp and their lawyer can get access to them.

Next, it’s MrWilson with a comment about what mockery is for, in response to an accusation of bias:

I have little power to actually stop the people actively destroying democracy, the economy, the lives of innocent people, and the country at large, so I make fun of them as medium for speaking the truth and very minutely hurting their fragile egos, though only their supporters are likely to see the comments.

I’ll also make fun of anyone else, including the weak Democrats who aren’t fighting back nearly as hard as they should. Ironically, claiming that it’s just political bias only reveals your political bias.

I have a bias against awful abusive authoritarians and their sycophants. That’s not political, that’s existential.

And that takes us to the funny side, where MrWilson is also the first place winner with a comment about the Oklahoma school superintendent who intends to grill teachers with a test from PragerU:

A few questions from the test leaked. Here’s a sample:

“Jesus says I’m cool. Why do you agree?”

“A blue haired radical leftist witch tries to cast a spell of woke on you. Which federal agency’s masked foot soldiers do you call in to protect you?”

“Do you know how to delete footage from a recorded public meeting?”

“Do you know how to purge the browser history from desktop and mobile devices?”

“If you saw pornography playing on my device, are you really sure?”

“Who do you think is the least likely person to be watching porn on a state-owned device and why do you think it’s me?”

In second place, it’s an anonymous comment about the DHS getting mad that people are using tech to warn others about ICE agents:

Turns out the snowflakes are just ice.

For editor’s choice on the funny side, we start out with a comment from That One Guy about the accidentally-revealed documents from the Trump-Putin summit:

Such a busy event

I’m confused as to why they’d need a detailed itinerary anyway, surely the whole thing would just be ‘Trump kissing Putin’s ass(metaphorical)’ and ‘Trump kissing Putin’s ass(literal)’…

Finally, it’s wah lium with a comment about the wild conspiracy theories in the new report from HHS:

Lots of WiFi at Kennedy’s home

RFK must have WiFi galore wherever he goes because it is clear that HIS blood-brain-barrier is welcoming all the BS and toxins in his body.

That’s all for this week, folks!
